In 2003 I decided to start my own landscaping business called Red Eft Aquatic and Terrestrial Designs. I specialize in building ponds and watersytems of streams, waterfalls and natural stone patios, walkways, stonewalls, stairways and terrracing. This is the story of how this name came to be.

During May 1999 I hiked the Long Trail from Massachusetts to Canada in a fundraising event to purchase equiptment and raise funding for the continuation of a after school at-risk youth program. My coleader and I organized the trip and collected donations of food and money for the trip totalling over $5,000.00. Following the tradition of past through hikers of Appalacian trail and Long trail hikers I wanted to come up with a trail name for myself. One day I counted over 50 redefts on the trail and that was when my identity with the Red eft began. After three days on the trail I decided on "Redeft".

The Red eft is the terrestrial phase of the Eastern Newt, widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Newts are in the Salamander family, lizardlike in shape and usually under 3 inches in length. Newts go through an aquatic gilled larval stage then through two adult stages: a terrestrial stage in which they are called efts, followed by a permanent aquatic stage. The adult lays it's eggs in the spring on the stems and leaves of water plants. The greenish brown larvae remain in water for several months before emerging as efts, orange-red with a double row of black ringed vermillion spots. The efts spend two or three years on land, hibernating in winter under leaves, and then returning permanently to the water, becoming olive green and developing a broad swimming tail.

I try to create a natural feel with my landscapes and ponds and I felt that the Red eft in it's many forms and phases represents what I feel a landscape should be. I like to use plants and stone native to the region I am working in to create a feeling of being in a natural environment found around you.
